Computers for Deserving Students a.k.a .

“ PCs4Kids ”

It is a known fact that students with fewer educational resources have more difficulty in school and are less likely to be successful. It is also acknowledged that in today’s environment, computer technology is key to successfully competing in school, and those students without computer access and the skills to use them will be at an increasing disadvantage. Since 1993, the Lazarus Foundation has been providing computer technology to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and deserving individuals.

The goal of “PCs4Kids” is to offer deserving Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) elementary, middle, and high school students computer systems (Internet ready Personal Computer, software, and printer) and the skills to use them. What makes this program so powerful is having technology friendly high school students (a.k.a. mentors) working with those students who receive the computers.

Specifically, “PCs4Kids” will, in addition to offering computers to deserving students, also provide a full range of experiences for the HCPSS high school mentors. For not only will the mentors work with the recipients, they will also work with the recipient’s teachers to ensure that the technology provided is used to help the student learn and succeed in school . The students receiving the computer systems will also be required to perform some 10 hours of community service for his/her school or the local public library.

“ PCs4Kids ”is being coordinated by the Lazarus Foundation and the Howard County Public School System.
